RUFUS THOMAS - ALL NIGHT WORKER
Quite simply a superb mover from this Memphis maven; I just learned that the Drapels (featuring Wendy Rene) sing background on this cut that also provided the name for a northeast US soul/freakbeat group.
Hi Derek, Actually, I think The All-Night Workers were from the USA, and probably from NY State. There were rather soul than freakbeat. The recorded "Why Don't You Smile Now" written by Lou Reed & John Cale before they formed The Velvet Underground which really worth listening. I don't if it's the same group that cut "Don't Put All Your Eggs In One Same Basket", an other northern soul killer. Anyway, "Why Don't You Smile Now" was then covered by the English band Downliners Sect who followed the path led by The Rolling Stones. To conclude, The Downliners Sect recorded a cover of "All-Night Worker" by Rufus "Hound Dog" Thomas Jr. What a tiny world!
you're right Oliver, that was a mistake on my part. I own the All Night Workers 45 and featured it here a few years ago. It is the same group that cut "Eggs In One Basket" (which is actually the A side of the single). One man's freakbeat is another man's soul!
